SUMMARY:Michigan Notable Books Author Tour: We Kept Our Towns Going: The Go
ssard Girls of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:\n\nPhyllis Michael Wong\, author of We Kept Our Towns Going:
The Gossard Girls of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula\, will be presenting at
the Library as part of this year’s Michigan Notable Books Author Tour.\n
 \nAs Michigan’s Upper Peninsula mines &amp\; forests became depleted\, t
he Gossard undergarment factories helped to sustain the local economy. The
women who sewed the corsets and bras became known as the Gossard Girls. F
rom the early 1900’s until the 1970’s\, the Gossard Girl’s helped to
support their families and keep the town going during war depression and
labor strikes. From cutting cloth and distributing materials to getting pa
id and having fun\, Phyllis M. Wong gives us a rare view of factory life f
rom the women on the sewing room floor.\n\nAbout the author:\n\nPHYLLIS MI

member of the university level academic world\, including as First Lady at
Northern Michigan University (2004–12) and San Francisco State Universi
ty (2012–19).\n\nMichigan Notable Books speak “to our state’s rich c
ultural\, historical\, and literary heritage and proves without a doubt th
at some of the greatest stories are found in the Great Lakes State.”\n\n

am is part of the 2023 Adult Summer Reading Program: All Together Now.\n\n
