SUMMARY:Crown Jewels: British Caribbean and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:\n\nIn 1775\, the British Empire in the New World consisted not
  of thirteen colonies\, but of almost thirty. The largest were on the main
 land\, but the most valuable were in the Caribbean and Jamaica was the ‘
 jewel in the Crown\,’ a sugar-exporting factory that generated more weal
 th for Britons that most mainland colonies combined. In this lecture\, his
 torian Richard Bell explores how fearful imperial officials worked to spli
 t their empire in half\, insulating the British West Indies from the conta
 gion of revolution by any means possible.\n\nAbout the Presenter:\n\nRicha
 rd Bell is a scholar\, writer\, and teacher at the University of Maryland.
  His research focuses on the history and culture of the United States betw
 een 1750 and 1877. He is the author of the new book Stolen: Five Free Boys
  Kidnapped into Slavery and Their Astonishing Odyssey Home (Simon &amp\; S
 chuster) and of two major online courses for The Great Courses (Wondrium).
