SUMMARY:AI: The Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly
DESCRIPTION: \n\nArtificial Intelligence has incredible potential to transf
orm many aspects of our lives and redefine how we interact with technology
and each other. However\, like any technology\, these opportunities also
come with risks.  Join the Michigan AI Lab as we discuss the potential fo
r AI to tackle some of our most complex societal issues such as climate ch
ange\, poverty\, and accessibility.  We will also discuss the inherent ri
sks such as bias\, security\, and misuse.  Bring your questions for an op
portunity to engage directly with Michigan AI faculty experts.\n\nAbout th
e Presenters:\n\nAlexander Rodriguez is an assistant professor of computer
science and engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. He rec
eived his PhD in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology
in 2023. His research interests include problems at the intersection of m
 achine learning\, time series\, multi-agent systems\, uncertainty quantifi
cation\, and scientific modeling. These are primarily motivated by public
health\, computational epidemiology\, and community resilience. His work h
as been recognized with the best paper award at ICML AI4ABM 2022 and was a
warded the 1st place in the Facebook/CMU COVID-19 Challenge and the 2nd pl
ace in the C3.ai COVID-19 Grand Challenge. He was also named a ‘Rising S
tar in Data Science’ by the University of Chicago Data Science Institute
in 2021 and a ‘Rising Star in ML &amp\; AI’ by the University of Sout
hern California in 2022. His dissertation received the 2024 Outstanding Di
ssertation Award from the College of Computing at Georgia Tech and the 202
4 ACM SIGKDD Dissertation Award Runner Up. His homepage is alrodri.engin.u
mich.edu.J\n\nJeong Joon (JJ) Park is an assistant professor in CSE. He is
broadly interested in computer vision\, graphics\, and artificial intelli
gence. His current research focus is on realistic 3D/4D content generation
using physical and neural representations: generations for large-scale\,
dynamic\, and interactive scenes are primary targets. His group explores 3
D vision\, graphics and machine learning\, and their applications to robot
ics\, medical imaging\, and scientific problems. Before coming to Michigan
\, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University and finished hi
s Ph.D. at U of Washington\, Seattle.\n\nThis program will be in the Libra
ry’s lower-level meeting room. Registration is appreciated. Scroll down
to register on the Library’s events calendar or call 734-426-4477 (ext.
